For outdoorsy Hitchcock fans, Bodega Bay is the kind of quiet seaside town that feels like it was made for a moody weekend escape. Set along the rugged Sonoma Coast north of San Francisco, it has all the good stuff: crab shacks, rocky bluffs, foggy beach walks, salty air, and just enough cinematic eeriness to remind you that Alfred Hitchcock knew exactly what he was doing when he chose it as the backdrop for The Birds. It’s not polished or bougie and that’s exactly the charm.
Where to stay
The Lodge at Bodega Bay is one of the higher end spots in the area. This coastal escape has sweeping views of the Sonoma Coast, perfect if you are looking for a little wine-country polish with ocean air.
If you are looking for something more mid range check out The Inn at The Tides. A classic Bodega Bay stay with harbor views, easy access to The Tides restaurant, and a relaxed, old-school coastal feel.

If quaint boutique hotels are more you style the Bodega Bay Inn is probably what you’re looking for. A cozy, low-key inn with garden charm and a quieter, more local feel. Ideal if you want something simple, sweet, and unfussy.
For a more private stay, I would skip the hotels and book this amazing Airbnb instead. It has stunning coastal views, direct beach access, and the added bonus of being able to harvest mussels right from the shore for an amazing dinner.

what to do
Bodega Bay is really about being outside preferably with a jacket, because coastal California likes to keep things dramatic. Start with a walk along the Bodega Head Trail, where the views are rugged, windswept, and absolutely worth the hair situation. You’ll get rocky cliffs, crashing waves, and that moody Sonoma Coast scenery that makes the whole place feel cinematic.

If you want to get out on the water, kayaking in the bay is another great way to see Bodega Bay from a different angle. It is calmer than the open ocean, and you may spot birds, seals, and plenty of working-harbor charm along the way.
Not feeling wildly outdoorsy? Lean into the Hitchcock of it all with a self-guided The Birds Tour and visit some of the filming locations connected to the movie. It adds a fun, slightly eerie layer to the trip especially when the fog rolls in.
And for a slower, more relaxing afternoon, book a treatment at Osmosis Day Spa Sanctuary. After hiking, kayaking, or pretending you are not nervous around seagulls, a spa stop feels like the perfect Bodega Bay reset.

Bodega Bay is not the kind of beach town that tries too hard, and that is exactly what makes it so good. It is foggy, rugged, a little mysterious, and full of the kind of quiet coastal charm that makes you want to slow down, order the crab, take the windy walk, and maybe keep one eye on the birds.
