Flamingo Cover-Up

Now that Memorial Day has officially come and gone I feel like it is finally Summer! The weather around her has been cooperating nicely, and we even made a trip to the pool this past weekend. This flamingo cover-up is the perfect thing to wear for a day at the town pool. It’s like the mini version of the caftan.  It covers up what you want it to, but still comfortable and stylish.

DIY flamingo cover upI used Butterick pattern B4684, and this fabric from Joanns to make my flamingo cover-up. It is actually supposed to be a tunic but I lengthened it about 4 inches to make it work as a cover up. After I finished it I put it on and thought “meh” it’s ok. It was cute and all, and exactly what I wanted to make, but it didn’t feel “done”. Enter pink ball trim! I added the trim around the sleeves and hem, and man did it make a difference! It amazes me that a small detail like trim can have such a big impact. It’s one of the many things I love about sewing. You can turn something from simple or “meh” to something fabulous by altering it in some small way. I used some grosgrain ribbon to “dress up” this blue dress I made a while back. It really made the dress pop with pink and white accents.

Flamingo Cover-UpI have had his trim for a long time. I bought it on Amazon, and also purchased it in turquoise and white. This stuff is the best! It’s very easy to attach and comes in so many different options. This feather trim would be amazing on the hem of a dress. How cool would this trim look on a black velvet shirt with bell sleeves?! My brain just kicked into overdrive with a bunch of new sewing ideas. Honestly, the options are endless. Sometimes the smallest thing can really turn something simple into something fabulous!

Sewing not your thing? That’s ok check out some of these great cover-ups from J Crew (on sale) here, and here and this one from J Crew Factory.

Hope you are all enjoying the beginning of summer as much as I am. Thanks for reading. Happy Monday. Hope you are all off to a great week!
