If you’ve been on Pinterest or fashion TikTok lately, you’ve probably noticed that matching sets, now called “co-ords” because we’re fancy, are everywhere. But let’s be real, this isn’t fashion’s first rodeo with coordinated outfits. Back in the 60s and 70s, matching sets were the uniform of the effortlessly stylish. Jackie O. had her skirt suits, mod girls had their two-piece minis, and everyone looked like they had their life together even if they didn’t. But somewhere between nostalgia and modern tailoring, I decided to embrace the trend—bouclé, bubblegum pink, and all.
Fast forward to today, and the trend has gotten a glow-up. Now it’s all soft knits, bold colors, textured fabrics (hello, bouclé!), and silhouettes that scream “I made an effort,” even if you got dressed in 12 seconds. Whether you pair your set with heels or sneakers, you’ll still look like the most pulled-together person in the room. It’s basically fashion’s version of a cheat code.

My Handmade Pink Matching Set: Behind the Seams
For this project, I chose a soft pink bouclé fabric. I do love bouclé fabric, it’s textured, and full of personality. That means the silhouette doesn’t need to be complicated because the fabric does all the talking. This set includes a bodice with a double flounce and a simple mid-length a line skirt. I wanted it to feel like a nod to the 70s, but still wearable today.
While this outfit feels more modern I have made a more traditional Jackie O style bouclé matching set here. I used this circle skirt pattern I purchased on Etsy. The bodice came from this pattern and I drafted the flounces myself. If you are interested in learning how to create your own flounce you can read my tutorial here. Unfortunately the fabric I used is no longer available but I have found some similar options here and here.
Bouclé can be a little tricky to work with. It frays very easily, but the texture adds so much richness to the final look. I lined both pieces to give it that “finished” feel. It’s the kind of outfit that makes you feel instantly “dressed” no overthinking required.

Why You’ll Love a Matching Set (Especially in Pink)
Aside from the nostalgia and craftsmanship, matching sets just make sense:
- ✔ Easy to style—wear them together or mix and match with other wardrobe staples
- ✔ Instantly elevated, especially in textured or tailored fabrics
- ✔ Playful, feminine, and fun—especially in pin
How I Styled It
Here are a few ways I’ve styled my handmade matching pink set:
- The OG look – This is a great outfit for a wedding. I added a pair of gold strappy sandals similar here, and here, a blue necklace that beings out the blue of the fabric (tutorial coming) and a blue faux croc barrel bag, similar here that also matches the blue in the fabric. (tutorial also coming).
- Relaxed date night style – I love dressed up denim. Wear the camisole with a great fitting pair of jeans, matching pink loafers and a pink velvet bag tutorial here or purchase one here or here. It’s comfortable but intentionally styled.
- A day in the city – This white cashmere sweater is the one in the photos and it’s amazing! It’s a little spendy, but worth every penny. Here is a less expensive option. Add a pair neutral tall brown boots similar here and here, a matching handbag similar here, and a pink rondelle beaded necklace here (tutorial coming). This look is perfect for brunch and a matinee in the city.
Final Thoughts
Making this set was more than a sewing project—it was a creative expression, a throwback to childhood, and a celebration of fashion that lasts. In a world of fast fashion and fleeting trends, there’s something powerful about creating your own clothes—especially ones that tell a story.
Thinking of sewing your own matching set? Or have a memory of wearing one as a kid? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
Until next time happy sewing!
