I don’t know about you, but I have a thing for symmetry. I’m by no means an anal or type A person, but when things aren’t symmetrical it just doesn’t look right to me. It looks messy. This pink one shoulder ruffle dress is definitely not symmetrical but for whatever reason I love it. I think anything with a one shoulder neckline looks great.
I made this using Mccalls 7741 pattern. I opted to go with version B. I was originally going to use the flounce with the tie that comes with the pattern, but at the last minute I decided to change it up. I decided to leave out the tie and just make a smaller flounce of my own.
I mentioned in last week’s post that long skirts and dresses don’t really work on me because I’m not very tall. When I attempted to hem this one I struggled a little because of the curved hemline. Because the dress is so wide at the bottom you need to cut it in a curve so it looks symmetrical when you put it on. The middle part of the hem needs to be longer than the sides. It all comes back to symmetry. It took me a few tries to get it right, and because of that the dress kept getting shorter and shorter. I almost gave up and started over because I thought it was too short, but as long as I’m careful and don’t bend over I shouldn’t have any wardrobe malfunctions.
I bought this great pink double knit fabric at Mood Fabrics in NY. It’s nice and thick and very easy to sew. My only complaint is that is wrinkles really easily. I’m a bit neurotic about my clothes being wrinkled. I think it looks sloppy. I iron almost everything before I wear it. My friends think I’m crazy, but I can’t help it. I’m annoyed that the dress in the photo above is wrinkled, but I’m trying to to let it get to me.
