Happy January! This post was meant to go up in December… then the holidays came, and, well you know how that goes. So better late than never here is my Holiday outfit, a red striped holiday skirt!
I hope everyone had a great holiday! I’m sure you are still trying to recover just like I am. I’m currently going through sugar and wine withdrawal and truth be told its not pretty. #morecoffeeplease I am slowly getting back to a regular schedule, but due to the craziness that ensues during the month of December, the blog took a back seat these last few weeks.
Anyway, not sure what holidays you celebrate, but in our house we celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah. My mom affectionately calls us “double dippers”, because my kids get double the presents. That means it double the crazy when shopping for holiday gifts.
This year Hanukkah started in the beginning of December. We started celebrating the holidays early and rolled right on through to New Years. Needless to say December was a looooong month.
Okay, okay enough about the holidays now then on to the good stuff…!
A Striped Holiday Skirt Pattern
I love, love, love how this skirt turned out! I think it is one of my absolute favorite projects I have made so far. For this very fun twirly circle skirt I used Simplicity 1200 pattern. It’s the same pattern I used it for my Navy and Orange Wool Plaid Skirt post. It is such an easy pattern and sews up very fast. The longest option the pattern comes with is midi length, and I wanted something more dramatic, so I added a few extra inches. I mean what girl doesn’t love a fun twirly full length skirt? I actually could have added another inch or two, so I could wear it with heels, but I like the way the flats look. This was such a fun skirt to make and wear so keep an eye out because you will definitely be seeing more like this soon.
A Striped Holiday Skirt Fabric
I picked this fabric up at a local store here in NJ. It was really inexpensive, like $3/yard, so I bought 5 yards. I wasn’t sure what I was going to make with it when I bought it, but is was so cheap I bought a bunch.
It’s some sort of taffeta/poly blend, and I’m assuming they don’t sell very much of it. They have a HUGE bolt of it and its been in stock for the last 3 years.
The store also carries a similar print in a larger stripe. I bought some of it a few years ago and made this Holiday Inspired Simple Skirt last year when I first started the blog.
The skirt is lined with black flannel backed satin that I bought at Joanns. The skirt fabric is thin, which is probably why it was so inexpensive, so I underlined it. The lining makes the skirt nice and cozy. Which helps when it’s freezing outside. All in all I ended up spending more on the lining than I did on the skirt fabric.
Black Velvet Drawstring Bag – Pattern and Fabric
Can you tell I love making these little draw string bags? They are so simple to make. I use Vogue pattern 1981 for this. You can see another version of it in the Navy and Orange Wool Plaid Skirt and Matching Drawstring Bag post.
I made the bag using some black velvet I bought at Joannes and lined it with the flannel backed satin I used for the skirt, which was also purchased at Joannes. The pattern for this bag tells you to use thick cording stitched in a zig zag pattern on the the outside of the bag to create the casing for the draw string. I didn’t like the way it looked it looks very 80’s but not in a good way. Instead I sewed 1in black grosgrain ribbon around the top and used 1/4in grosgrain ribbon for the draw string.
A Striped Holiday Skirt Outfit
This skirt makes a pretty big statement on it’s own so I kept the rest of the outfit simple. I wore my black velvet blazer, a black sweater, black suede J Crew flats and called it a day.
As a side note I bought the velvet blazer from Ann Taylor years ago and never really wore it. I have worn it non-stop for last few months. I guess I finally realized how versatile it is!
