So Long Summer | Red and White Seersucker Skirt

So Long Summer | Red and White Seersucker Skirt

Ah Labor Day…summer’s last hurrah!  I hope where ever you are, you are enjoying the long weekend with family and friends.  Are you traveling this weekend?  Traveling around the tri-state area on a holiday weekend usually means A LOT of traffic.  So we are having a stay-cation.  Although I hate saying good bye to summer I love the fresh start September offers.

September means back to school for most kids, and it gives parents (myself included) a chance to get organized and back on a schedule.  Even though Labor Day usually signals the official end of summer, I am sure the weather will remain warm here for a while.  I’m fairly certain I’ll get some use out of this red and white seersucker skirt before it gets too cold.

I used McCall’s 3830 for this.  It’s one of my favorite patterns.  What I love about it is the simplicity and versatility of it.  It’s a simple pencil skirt silhouette so you can really get creative with it.  I have used it here and here and made two very different skirts.

This time I added a double flounce to the bottom.  I created it by making two circle patterns.  The easiest way to do this is to take something round like a bowl and trace it on to a piece of paper.  Then decide how long you want the flounce to be.  I wanted the large flounce to be 5″ and the smaller one to be 3″.

Using a ruler, measure down 5″ plus one inch for the seam allowance from the edge of the circle and mark with a pencil.  Work your way around the entire circle.  Measure every inch or so and make a mark.  When you have made it all the way around, connect the marks with a pencil.  Next cut out around the outside of the circle then cut a straight line into the middle of the circle and cut that out as well.  Then, use the paper pattern to trace on to your fabric.  Hem the flounces and sew them together and attach to the hem of your skirt.

I bought this fabric at Joann Fabric, but you can find seersucker at almost any fabric store.  It’s probably on sale now that Summer is almost over.

I have to give a shout out to my husband for taking these photos.  He did a great job! This is his car I’m sitting in.  It’s a 1974 MGB Convertible and it’s his most favorite thing. I sometimes wonder if he had to choose between me or the car, would I come in second?  #secondplacewife

If you would rather buy than DIY I have you covered.  There are some great sales this weekend.  Shop below to find a seersucker skirt or dress of your own.

Thanks for reading.  I hope you are off to a good Tuesday.  Enjoy the short week!
