Black Watch Plaid Circle Skirt – A Tale of Two Skirts

This week’s post is a tale of two skirts that I made using black watch taffeta fabric. This week I’ll show you the circle skirt and next time (after I find the time to take some photos) I’ll show you the ruffled mini skirt.  Two skirts made from the same fabric create two very different styles.

It’s no secret that I have a thing for fabric.  When I first started sewing, I would only but fabric a yard at a time or buy just enough for whatever I was making.  Now that’s not the case anymore.  Now I buy I minimum of three yards (unless it’s really expensive) no matter what I am making.  Most of the time, I buy fabric and don’t even have a project in mind; so, I buy at least three yards, because I know, with that amount of fabric, I can make a long or full skirt or a short dress.

Clearly, I took these photos back before the holidays thinking I would have them posted by Christmas.  That is why, there I am, holding a Christmas wreath in almost every photo.

Black Watch Plaid Circle Skirt – Fabric

Black Watch plaid fabric is great.  It’s wintery but not overly Christmas-y. It’s made up of black, navy and dark green plaid and you can wear all winter long.  I bought three yards with the plan to make a full circle skirt and had enough left over to make a ruffled mini skirt.  Score right!?  Who doesn’t love a two for one?!

Black Watch plaid comes in many different fabric types.  Wool is probably to most popular, but it can be cotton, silk or taffeta which is the fabric I used.  It’s a very popular print that has a preppy air to it.  It’s so popular that even Kate and Megan like to wear it.  That might have something to do with the fact that Black Watch tartan (or plaid) was first worn by the Royal Regiment of Scotland.  Can you imagine wearing a skirt into battle?  I’m sure there were a lot of wardrobe malfunctions back then.

Black Watch Plaid Circle Skirt – Pattern

This outfit was supposed to be my Holiday post, but I’m a little late.  The circle skirt turned out great.  I used Simplicity 1200 which is my favorite circle skirt pattern.  I have used this pattern a LOT.  You can see other versions of it here, (one of my favorites) here (last year’s holiday skirt) and here.

Black Watch Plaid Circle Skirt – Styling

I found the green velvet blazer on sale at J Crew and wore a black camisole underneath.  Even though there wasn’t any snow when I took these pictures, it was REALLY cold out!  I love how the red wreath contrasts with the green blazer.

Stay tuned I’ll have another post soon about the ruffled mini skirt I made with what was left from this project. It’s really cute if I do say so myself!

Enjoy your weekend! Thanks for reading.
