Faux Fur Collared Jacket Inspired by Kate Spade

I made this faux fur collared jacket a few years ago while I was still taking sewing lessons.  It was the first piece of clothing I made that I was really proud of and seemed good enough to wear in public.

I saw this jacket on Pinterest made by Kate Spade.  It was adorable and I really wanted it.  The only thing stopping me was the $600 price tag.

I love everything about the Kate Spade brand.  It’s fun, with a vintage flare, but still very polished.  I appreciate that Kate Spade has a high price point, but $600 for a faux fur jacket was, in my opinion, absurd.

I figured I could make something like the Kate Spade version, but it was going to be an intermediate level project.  At the time, I considered myself an advanced beginner, but because I was taking regular sewing lessons I knew my sewing instructor would be there to help me.

Pattern – Faux Fur Collared Jacket

The first step was to find started a pattern.  Honestly it didn’t take me long.  I started searching online and came across this!  Talk about fate!  It was as if this girl was reading my thoughts!  Here presented to me on a silver platter was the exact pattern and instructions for the $600 Kate Spade faux fur collared jacket!!  What are the odds?  I mean really?  Here’s is exactly what I was looking for.

Fabric – Faux Fur Collared Jacket

The very next day I began searching for fabric.  In a small independent fabric store near where I live I found fabric that was almost identical to the fabric in the original!

Once again it seemed like the sewing gods were smiling down on me.  It was as if I was destined to make this jacket.

Sewing the Faux Fur Collared Jacket

The jacket didn’t have a lot of pattern pieces.  It was basically the front, back, sleeves and collar.  It came together fairly easily from what I remember and, as I mentioned, I had help from my sewing teacher.

Lining the Faux Fur Collared Jacket

Next came sewing the lining.  This was the first project I had made that I put a lining in. It wasn’t hard, but it’s pretty time consuming.  My sewing teacher showed me how to hand stitch it.  It was tedious and I don’t usually take the time to hand stitch my garments but it really made a difference.  It makes the jacket look more “finished”.  I can’t really remember where I found the pink lining.  I think it was from Joann’s, but I’m not sure.

Lining the Sleeves in the Faux Fur Collared Jacket

I accidentally cut the sleeve pieces of the lining too short.  So, I had to get creative.  I ended up sewing a piece of 1.5” pink grosgrain ribbon to the edge of the lining to make up the difference.  I think it looks pretty considering it was the third thing I had made, and looks like a design choice rather than mistake ?

Closure – Faux Fur Collared Jacket

The Kate Spade version of this is a pullover, was marketed as a “faux fur shirt”.  Now, I’m pretty open when it comes to design choices, but I’m so sure about a faux fur shirt. The jacket I made is very warm and I can’t see wearing this inside without sweating profusely.

My version is also a pullover but I vented one side of the jacket under the arm and put three large snaps on the inside.  The fact that you need to pull it over your head to get it on is kind of annoying, but I didn’t want to put in a zipper.  The fur would get caught in it and would be an even big pain to get on and off.

All in all, I love how the jacket turned out.   They only difference between mine and the original is that I chose to run the “stripes” vertical instead of horizontal.   My sewing teacher made this recommendation at the time, and now I have no idea why she suggested it. However, I still love the way it looks.

When I took the photos for this post I carried my Pink and Red Leather Handbag.  I was concerned that taking photos outside my house would look bleak and miserable, but I think they turned out ok.  There was just enough snow on the ground to make it look pretty and white, and the pink bag makes for a nice pop of color.  We have had very little snow here this year.  I’m not complaining, but it looks really gross outside and not the most picturesque place to take photos . Part of me wishes it would snow just so it would look a little more seasonal, but I really don’t want to shovel it.
