Designing With Both Function and Fashion in Mind
When I create a handmade hat, I start with more than just a pretty picture in my head. I consider:
- Brim size – Wide enough to shade your skin without overwhelming your look.
- Material – Breathable bright colored linen, and mid weight fusible stabilizer to give the hat some structure.
- Details – I kept it simple and chose bright solid color linen
Each color choice is intentional, balancing sun safety with a look you’ll love wearing all season.
From Simple Linen to Beach-Ready Beauty
I used this pattern that I purchased on Etsy. It is very simple to make and has only three pattern pieces. I decided to make my hats bright and colorful to match my current swimsuits.

Since the linen is a drapey fabric I needed something to give some structure. Otherwise it would flop down in your face. I used this stabilizer which gives it just enough shape. Bonus: the hat is still flexible enough that you can pack it in your bag.
