Never have I ever made anything cut on the bias. I have been sewing for…almost 10 years and I never had the interest. I think I thought it was difficult to make, but it’s not really hard at all. So today’s post is all about my new blue satin skirt and cutting on the bias.

All cutting on the bias means is that the skirt is cut on a 45 degree angle across the fabric. Usually you cut fabric along the grain line instead of across it. When you cut something on the bias it gives a different drape and is very flattering.

I used McCalls pattern 7931 for my blue satin skirt, and it turned out great! A few tips…once you cut your fabric you need to hang it up overnight. This allows the fabric to stretch. Because you cut the fabric at a 45 degree angle your fabric now has some stretch to it. You will want to lay your fabric out on your pattern pieces again and recut the hem depending how much your fabric stretched. I know it sounds like a pain but it’s worth doing.

I bought it specifically to match this sweater fabric I also bought at Joanns. I feel like buying fabric at Joanns is a bit of a crap shoot, but this time I got lucky.
