How to Make a Summer Tote Bag – New Season New Bag

Tote bags are the best right? They hold all of your “stuff”. Whether it’s a trip to the beach or just running errands a tote bag keeps you organized. This week I’m going to show you how to make a summer tote bag of your own.

I spotted this great looking tote bag on Mark & Graham’s website about a month ago and fell in love. I have made version of this tote bag with the bamboo handles in the past. You can read the tutorial here. I also made a pink leather version here. The difference with this tote was the fabric. The Mark & Graham website describe it as a raffia tote bag. To some people this bag might look plain, but I think the clean lines and neutral fabric make it look chic and simple. It will go with any outfit.

Since I have made a version of this bag before I knew it wouldn’t take long to replicate another one. However, it did take me a little while to find the right fabric. A lot of what I found was high end designer upholstery fabric, and I wasn’t going to pay $100/yard. I only needed about a half a yard to make it.

I finally found this fabric at Calico Corners and after ordering a sample it was a great match. I had to order a yard witch was fine, but the fabric was 60″ wide so I have a lot left over. I might make a matching clutch to carry inside the tote bag.

The only difference with this bag is that I added some ribbon to the top so you could tie it closed. I love the look of the bag, but I wanted to add some sort of closure. You can’t add a zipper because of the handles, so I thought the ribbon was a great simple trick that allows you to close the bag.

The other difference between mine and the Mark & Graham version (besides the cost) is that I didn’t monogram my bag. I might do it later on. Instead I added a round personalized key chain that I made with my Cricut Air Explore out of navy blue leather.
