Fall Floral Dress

I’m not a fall floral dress kind of person. Most floral patters scream Little House on the Prairie to me. However, I saw this fabric and it kind of spoke to me. Even though it has a flower pattern it seemed more 70’s boho and less Laura Ingall’s.

There is a scene in the movie Cruella that centers on the iconic department store Liberty of London. In the first few seconds you hear Emma Stone talk about how fabulous the store is as people walk by it on the street. Everyone in the scene is well dressed in muted neutral tones, pleated skirts, beautiful dress coats, tall boots and either newsboy or floppy felt hats. So, when I saw this fabric that is what I thought of. Maybe boho isn’t the best way to describe it, but the muted colors and fall floral dresses make me think of this scene and its 70’s vibe.

Design Breakdown

This dress is a combination of 3 different patterns. The bodice is Butterick 5985. You can see it here in my Sewing with Stripes post. You’ll notice I used his pattern a lot. I like the way it fits and it’s a simple style that can be used to create different looks. When you find something that works why mess with it? The skirt is New Look 6491. The instructions tell you to gather the skirt, but I decided to pleat it instead. I thought the gathers looked messy. The pocket pattern is Simplicity 1370. I use this pocket on all the dresses I make. It’s just the right size, and again if it works why change it up?

Details – Fall Floral Dress

All these separate pattern pieces came together very easily, and the pockets are the best part of the dress. The bodice of this fall floral dress is lined, but the skirt is not. I find it a waste of fabric to sew a lining in a skirt. Unless the skirt is designed to have a lining, you can always just wear a slip underneath.

How to Wear It

I paired my fall floral dress with tall camel boots, a suede bag, a long camel colored sweater coat and a tweed wine bag. This is a great look for a low key dinner. The sweater coat is the same as this one but a different color.

For a more casual look, wear it with a denim jacket, low boots, and the same tweed wine bag. It’s the perfect size for a wallet, phone, fresh flowers and magazines. Everything you need for brunch with the girls.
